Lutein
One of the family of carotenoids, Lutein is a key element of eye health. It is concentrated in the retina, the macula (the spot on the retina which is responsible for central vision) and the lens where its powerful antioxidant properties protect the cells from oxidative damage and the resultant conditions such as cataracts, Age related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and eye fatigue. It may also aid in slowing the progression of Retinitis pigmentosa (a genetic condition). As an added bonus, Lutein also protects the DNA in all body cells from damage which is a major factor in preventing many types of cancer. As an anti-oxidant it also has cardiovascular protective properties.
Zeaxanthin
Another carotenoid and closely related to Lutein, Zeaxanthin has a similar structure and similar properties to Lutein. It is particularly important in protecting the Macula from damaged related to sunlight.
Vitamin A
The most well-known benefit of Vitamin A for the eyes is in supporting good night vision. In addition,, Vitamin A may help in preventing cataract formation, conjunctivitis, dry, eyes, double or blurred vision, eye inflammation, bloodshot eyes and many more. It is particularly important in maintaining the integrity of the cornea (the transparent cover over the iris and pupil which keeps out dirt and pathogens and helps to focus light for clear vision) and protecting the cornea against damage.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E helps to protect cells from damage. Studies have demonstrated that in the eye, it specifically protects against several forms of Retinopathy, Age related Macular Degeneration, cataract formation and glaucoma. Vitamin E also has synergistic effects (enhanced function) with Alpha Lipoic acid.
Bilberry
Many of the health benefits of Bilberry stem from the ability to stabilize and improve the permeability of the capillaries. This is also true in the eye where Bilberry has been shown to improve blood circulation of the capillaries in and around the eye. The resultant benefits include improvements in ALL aspects of eye health and day and night vision.
Vitamin B2
: Vitamin B2 may help to prevent or alleviate discomfort of the eyes related to exposure to irritants, including bloodshot eyes, eye inflammation, eye fatigue and tearing. Vitamin B2 also protects and enhances the function of the cornea and the conjunctiva.
Zinc
: Zinc is in important in protecting the optic nerve and enabling it to function optimally. It may help to prevent night blindness. It protects the Macula and retards the progression of cataracts and retinitis pigmentosa.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
ALA is able to penetrate eye tissue and protect both the retina and the lens from damage and degeneration. It may prevent cataracts in both healthy persons and in people suffering from Diabetes. It may also help t prevent age related macular degeneration and alleviate glaucoma.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a potent anti-oxidant and has healing and protective functions in its own right. In addition, Vitamin C enhances the absorption of Lutein, Vitamin A and other nutrients while also protecting many nutrients from oxidative damage AND enabling the nutrients to be "recycled" rather than excreted and lost (such as Vitamin E and ALA).
